Rock climbing affects cliff-plant communities by reducing species diversity and altering species coexistence patterns

چکیده
Abstract Cliffs are unique ecosystems with an outstanding but relatively unknown plant diversity, harboring rare, endemic and threatened species, also rock-specialist or generalist species that can become locally common dominant on cliffs. The rising popularity of climbing represents increasing threat to cliff biota, affecting community composition potentially diminishing diversity associations. We used a novel sampling design closely-paired climbed versus unclimbed points along the cliff-face. sampled routes different intensities in El Potrero Chico (Nuevo León, Mexico), identifying analyzing associations plots. Diversity cliffs was high, even greater than other regional ecosystems. found reduced abundance, cover, plots, irrespective intensity. Dominant were most negatively affected by rock terms some rare including endemics endangered entirely absent from Co-occurrence analysis showed number between pairs greatly positive existed plots not which may contribute disappearance species. Finally, NMDS revealed changed significantly due climbing. Our results indicate conservation science should convince stakeholders need for holistic focus solely emblematic since dynamics preservation depend interactions

متن کاملIntraspecific genetic variation and species coexistence in plant communities.
Many studies report that intraspecific genetic variation in plants can affect community composition and coexistence. However, less is known about which traits are responsible and the mechanisms by which variation in these traits affect the associated community. Focusing on plant-plant interactions, we review empirical studies exemplifying how intraspecific genetic variation in functional traits...
متن کاملOn the Local Coexistence of Species in Plant Communities
Coexistence of many competitive species is very common in natural plant communities. For example, almost all forests and grasslands consist of various species. Extremely high biodiversity is seen in tropical rain forests. Grassland communities also often consist of many species. In plant communities, spatially competitive species of plants coexist in a mosaic pattern. Communities with a single ...
متن کاملMicrohabitat locality allows multi-species coexistence in terrestrial plant communities
Most terrestrial plant communities exhibit relatively high species diversity and many competitive species are ubiquitous. Many theoretical studies have been carried out to investigate the coexistence of a few competitive species and in most cases they suggest competitive exclusion. Theoretical studies have revealed that coexistence of even three or four species can be extremely difficult. It ha...
